  17. <p>     With the lira down and the nation rocked by the Mani Pulite,
  18. or Clean Hands, kickback investigations, Italians need some good
  19. economic news. They looked for it, naturally, in the Milan fall
  20. ready-to-wear shows, just ended, hoping in part that a
  21. recovering U.S. economy will send a windfall of clothing orders
  22. their way. One enticement: with the weaker lira, price tags will
  23. be at least 15% lower than last year's. But the critics' reviews
  24. were mixed. Clown motifs, gold frogging, Tyrolean touches or
  25. military flourishes cluttered many of the outfits and seemed
  26. inappropriate for local customers who are trying to hide their
  27. wealth. In the end old masters Giorgio Armani and Gianfranco
  28. Ferre walked off with the honors--and, by no mere
  29. coincidence, the least brazen collections.
